How do I save money and how does the system work?
Positive Energy will get copies of your electric bills for the last 12 months in order to calculate how much electricity (kWh) you used. We will then determine how many panels you need to offset your electricity usage for the entire year. After getting all the necessary permits from the local municipality, your utility company, and NYSERDA we will then install your system.
The panels will produce DC (Direct Current) power anytime they are exposed to sunlight. We will mount them to your roof or on the ground and then wire them together in series to create strings of the appropriate voltage (not to exceed 600V DC). We the panels into an Inverter, which changes DC power to the 240V AC power that is utilized by your house and provided by the power company. From there, the 240V output is either tied directly into your panel box via a special breaker or it is attached tied to the incoming power line via a "line-side tap".
In order for you to be credited for your electricity generation, a bi-directional net meter is installed. When you are producing more electricity than you are using, such as during the middle of a summer day, the meter credits you with production and vice versa. You end up building up a large amount of credits for electricity produced during the major production months between March and October and then use up those credits during the lower production months in the winter. At the end of your production year (ending in mid-march) you will be paid the wholesale rate for any excess credits still on your account.
